It’s all about the view

April 29, 2009

The overnight bus to Uyuni was terrible. Bolivian roads are terrible. It felt like I was going down Death Road again. There was no sleep, but there was the new Indy Jones on DVD – which was also terrible. Bad, bad, bad. And so was Uyuni.

I was quite happy to be out of La Paz, but, what I hadn’t realised was things were just about to get worse. Lucky, we left Uyuni quick enough. It was into the 4×4 and vamos already!

Sonya and I thought we could be lucky enough to be the only ones in the 4×4. But alas, it wasn’t to be. 3 Slovenian geek-boys joined us, along with a lovely German lady. Well, the Slovenian boys were just a little too excited that they had joined us Muppets. Me and Sonya were just a little too pleased to find one of them absolutely gorgeous, and not really as geeky as the other 2. By excited, I mean panting puppy excited. I’m sure they are passing us off in photos as their girlfriends already. Let me just clarify, we did nothing to encourage!

Anyways, it wasn’t about the Slovenian boyfriends, the cramped 4×4, the absolute freezing conditions, the lack of a shower (at all, that’s right, they don’t do showers), the sharing of filthy toilets, the inappropriate use of the Atacama Desert as our own personal toilet, the stone-base beds, the dust, the salt boogers, the feezing conditions, the freezing conditions, the freezing conditions, the freezing conditions, the bloody same song played over and over and over again by our driver, and the fact we got ripped off. No, it wasn’t about those things at all, it was about the landscape.

Salt flats, snow, lagoons, rock formations, canyons, geisers, cactus islands, desert, volcanoes, mountains, 2 bit towns, wild llama’s, stupid annoying pom’s. You name it, we saw it over 3 looooong days. Yes, it was amazing. Yes, I was glad to get out of there.

Hopefully, the pictures will be more forgiving than me. Hope you’re all safe and well. No we don’t have swine flu – yet. x
